Grapevine, Texas is a little town right next to the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport.1 The city is also known for its wineries and beauty. Here you and your family are sure to have a surplus of attractions to keep your children and teenagers entertained. Start your day off by taking a visit to the Summit Climbing Gym where you can enjoy indoor rocks to practice your skills. This attraction offers a variety of wall heights great for everyone from beginners to those falling into the intermediate category. Then make your way to the city's lake, which offers over 8,000 acres of water great for everything from fishing to wind surfing. Do not forget to take a picnic to make this outing a lasting memory for your children and teenagers. Two other great entertainment venues include Skatetown and the Grapevine's Runaway Theatre. Either location provides adequate amenities for family bonding and fun.

Mental Health in The Woodlands

Having a support system of people who are caring, compassionate and understanding is often a key factor in overcoming times of great stress, sadness, or crisis. The Grief Resource Center offers support groups for people of all ages who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Educational and outreach programs teach the community about the process of grief and strategies to deal with it in a healthy way. For further details, call 281-292-6800.2 For individuals who seek to overcome addiction, Woodlands Church provides men's and women's groups that focus on a religiously-based system of recovery. The program promotes wellness, provides healthy coping strategies, and guides participants toward acceptance of who they are. These groups offer individuals the support they need to weather the storm and emerge a well-functioning and mentally healthy person.3

For students who face bullying, going to school can induce fear and anxiety, and cause significant stress that prevents them from achieving their educational potential. To help combat behaviors that harass and intimidate, the Conroe Independent School District has implemented a comprehensive anti-bullying program for students, parents and school personnel to follow. Students are taught to be calm, walk away, and not engage those who are being mean to them. They are also encouraged report incidents to a trusted adult. All kids also undergo intervention training so they know how to respond appropriately when they witness someone else being bullied. By following these procedures, students help create a positive school climate in which everyone feels comfortable. Additional information about these policies is available by calling 936-709-7751.4

Current Initiatives

The Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless began the Beginning to End Homeless Initiative in 2002 in order to develop a plan to provide housing assistance for the county's poorest residents. The initiative identified several causes of homelessness, including lack of a decent wage, addiction or other mental health issue, and lack of affordable housing. To address the housing issue, the initiative has increased the number of affordable and subsidized housing units. This housing is part of a larger system of care that includes support services such as life skills and job trainings, as well as case management and addiction services. By taking this systemic approach, the initiative succeeds in the endeavor to end homelessness and poverty, and facilitate better mental health functioning.5
